Today there is a great debate over public school and the new Common Core standards being inflicted upon our children.  Many parents are choosing to homeschool more and more as they see their children’s education going into the wrong direction.  Early studies have shown that children are confused and frustrated over the “new teaching methods” that Common Core is procuring with our children.

Some of the problems with Common Core is that it is wanting the child to give the “right” answer with lots of explanation.  The “right” answer, as designed by the program, was originally said to encourage “thought” and “reasoning” but has ended up as rote memorization not of math skills, but of scripts about math.  What started out as simple 1 x 5=5 problem, has become involved with multiple steps to arrive at the correct answer. The emphasis is no longer on knowing that 1 x5=5 as an absolute, it’s moving towards the explanation.  The how, and they why, and can I really talk through the procedures that I went through to get this answer—not just knowing that it is 5, but why it is 5?  How do I know that?

Common Core standards have been adopted into many of the states without any field test.  These standards are being imposed about our children of the nation despite the fact that no one has any idea how they will affect students, teachers, or schools. The math standards focuses on investigative math, which has been shown to be a disaster with previous studies.  All the while, our children are suffering from confusing and frustration with new rules for math.  We no longer teach our children math facts “as is,” we are now going through a lengthy learning discussing about the “why” and “how” of it all.

As more and more parents are seeing the flaws and problems associated with Common Core, more are turning to homeschooling.  They are realizing the need to teach their children a straight forward method of learning.  Simplicity is favored over complexity in life.  It should be that way in children’s educational learning.
