You have taken the plunge to homeschooling……now what?  You’re wondering what you need to know as far as your state laws are concerned such as:   Who do I notify of my decision to homeschool?  What are the reporting requirements?  Are there required subjects or can I decide what I want my child to learn?  What are the age requirements for my child?  Those are all great questions that need to be answered in order to be within the Law requirements for the state of Arizona.

First let’s look at how Arizona Law defines what a homeschooler is?

Homeschool means a nonpublic school conducted primarily by the parent, guardian or other person who has custody of the child or nonpublic instruction provided in the child’s home.  https://www.afhe.org/.

Secondly, you need to know what the compulsory ages are…..or ages that a child is required by law to attend school.  They are between 6 and 16 years of age.  One exemption is for a homeschooled child who is younger than 8yrs old by Sept 1 of that school year.  The parent/guardian/person with custody may exempt that child by filing an affidavit of intent not to begin homeschooling.  So if you wanted to wait to homeschool your child when they are 8yrs old, then you can with notification.

Thirdly, you need to know the subjects which are required by law… reading, grammar, math, social studies, and science.

Lastly, you as a parent or guardian, must file a notarized affidavit of intent to operate a homeschool program with the county school superintendent within 30 days of beginning your schooling.  This is the only notification required unless you decide to discontinue homeschooling.  Again that notification needs to happen within 30 days of discontinuing class.  The required documents needed for the filing is a copy of the child’s certified birth certificate or other reliable sources such as previous school records or baptism certificate.  A document that can verify the child’s age.

As you can see, Arizona Laws are straightforward and should not be difficult to follow.  Although this is where you get started, it’s just the beginning……you will want to find a commumity of homeschoolers to learn from and to bounce ideas off of and to be encouraged by.  We at Alternative Education At Home are here to help.  Just click here….. https://www.myhomeschoolroadmap.com/
